Kate & I lost power during a wicked storm that cruised through Derby City last night! We endured no more than 45 seconds of 80 mph wind gusts and a shot of rain, but had to endure 19 hours without electricity! The experience afforded us a vivid opportunity to consider the fate of those less fortunate and to appreciate the very basic luxuries that we often take for granted.
... Like light! Being avid campers, we had a good supply of battery operated lanterns, but even those make reading, plucking chin hairs (that was for you, Mark), finding matching socks and assembling lunch boxes challenging.
... Like heat! Oy - when you drop from 59 to 18 degrees in mere hours, you appreciate your furnace! We missed ours, but found that flannel sheets, down comforters and a PJ-clad 7-year-old's radiant heat can keep you snuggly through a night.
... Like my brand-new Blackberry (thank you big kids)! No, it's not an iPhone, but dang it kept me in touch with Snookie (more a benefit for her), kept us apprised of weather conditions (slow "Edge" technology notwithstanding) and kept me "in business" until I found my way to Highland Coffee to take advantage of their free WiFi & plugs to recharge said Blackberry!
... Like LG&E Workcrews! They were out and stayed out throughout the night and through most of today tackling the root causes of our persistent power outtage. I will have less heartburn writing out my check for my gas & electric coverage this month.
But mostly, I'm grateful that most hours of most days the Girls on Speed have a safe, comfortable place to call home and loving family members and friends who fill the house with the best kind of energy!
Our prayers are with those who are less fortunate ... both those who were also victims of this storm - but mostly those individuals who survive much more significant losses or go without even these basics for most of their lives.
I hope we never look at our lightswitches the same way again!
