The weekend before the frivolity of Derby and our "Unstable Clown Party", Kate (and her cousin Christopher) celebrated their First Communion. For those of you unfamiliar with the Catholic ceremony, it is the time when young people receive Eucharist (the Body and Blood of Christ) for the very first time. Kate (as you can see) was beautiful. Her dress was the exact one worn by her big sister Kristin and was hand-made by Bonmom - who was with us in abundant spirit!
As part of Kate's preparation, we talked about various forms of "communion" - of being "one" ...
So, was really no coincidence that this same weekend we celebrated another communion of sorts as family and lifelong friends gathered to honor "Grandmere" on her 70th birthday. It was overwhelming to see the tapestry of her life represented so beautifully through the faces, words and notes that were collected for this remarkable event. While the party itself was intended for Mom, for me it was actually a celebration of my incredible family who loves and is clearly loved by so very many.
There's a song we sing at Church ... "We are many parts. We are all one body. And the gifts we have, we are given to share". I see the many parts of our body (our family) share their gifts in such profound ways. As a mother, what better way to raise children than in the presence of such genuinely good, creative, resilient and giving people.
Happy "Communion" to all!
